Ruel Maternity Clinic
The Philippines has one of the highest mortality rates in the world for women giving birth. 1 in 140 women will die in childbirth as opposed to approximately 1 – 11,000 in most developed nations.
While the Philippine government is working hard to address this problem by budgeting millions of Peso’s for pre and postnatal care there is simply not enough money to go around as is the case in many developed nations. The lack of funds and equipment leave some hospitals poorly equipped to handle the needs of mothers in child birth. Most children who die in their infancy die in the first 28 days of life. Many women cannot afford the few dollars needed to go to a hospital and are forced to have their babies at home with little professional help.
In order to address this problem the Ruel Foundation in co-operation with local healthcare professionals and with the support of Mercy in Action has establisheds a fully equipped birthing centre on Mindoro Island. Free pre and postnatal care and delivery is provided to women living in poverty. For just a few dollars, we can provide a place for the mother to have her child and give free medication if needed.

Ruel Foundation Children's Home
The Ruel Foundation works closely with authorities to help rescue children that are close to death from starvation or abuse. In many cases we just provide milk powder to assist a family in getting a child’s weight up, however, in some cases this is not enough. The Department of Social Welfare usually ask us to accept the child into our Ruel House until the child is strong enough to return to their family or be placed for adoption.

Ruel, our namesake, was found suffering from malnutrition in a hospital due to a cleft lip with cleft palate. He was unable to suckle properly or ingest food to satisfy his growing body. His mother could not afford the surgery to rectify this ailment, or the nutrients necessary to provide her child with an adequate diet. Thanks to the simple surgery to rectify this problem Ruel is now a happy and healthy little boy.
