A Fresh Perspective
08 September 2009
The thousands of tricycle drivers, who provide transport for 90% of the population who can't afford their own transport, normally earn the princely sum of NZ$10 a day. A family meal at McDonalds still costs $30. Behind the roadside shops and stalls are normal housing where working people can afford to live because the rents aren't too great. But behind these, in the swamp areas, are the squatter huts. These are where people with no jobs, education and consequently no income can live for free. A stay in the public hospital is free, however all drugs have to be paid for, and so, for want of $50 of antibiotics, a patient may not be treated.
Now we know why the Ruel Foundation is so vital in Calapan. Children are malnourished and abandoned because there are no other options for their parents. Mothers die in childbirth because there are no other options.
What we saw at the Ruel Foundation was children who would otherwise die, thriving. But we also saw 5 other children who had no where to go because the Ruel House was full.
We hope that there are other organisations like Ruel who can take care of them.

Ruel, our namesake, was found suffering from malnutrition in a hospital due to a cleft lip with cleft palate. He was unable to suckle properly or ingest food to satisfy his growing body. His mother could not afford the surgery to rectify this ailment, or the nutrients necessary to provide her child with an adequate diet. Thanks to the simple surgery to rectify this problem Ruel is now a happy and healthy little boy.
