Luke Thompson Fundraising Concert 25/09/09

20 October 2009

Kathryn Wakerley and Katrina Hoskin both local mums went on a two week mission to the Philippines to work for the Ruel Foundation.  What they saw there shocked them, sick children whose parents couldn't afford medicine to make them well and a level of poverty never seen in New Zealand.  On return they were keen to find ways to fundraise more money to continue the work of the Foundation.  A concert was suggested and as a song by Luke Thompson called "Look the other way"  had really impacted Kathryn she thought that he would be a natural choice to ask for support.

The concert, held at the Bethlehem College Performing Arts Centre was a great success with many businesses supporting the idea and donating towards the costs associated with holding an event so that all money raised was able to be used directly for the children.  In total $5584 was raised and this will go towards an eye replacement, cleft lip and palate surgeries ( to be done in January 2010) care of the 12 children currently housed in the Orphanage, and the Birthing Centre.

Our Thanks go out to all those mentioned below with out whose support we would not have been so successful.

Luke Thompson, Matt Bodman, "the Band", Bethlehem College, Bay Plastic Surgery, Rob & Rose McGregor, Joanna Buxton, Brookfield and Mount New World's, Paul Fromont and Grahame & Pauline Parsonson.

And of course all the students from Bethlehem College who helped out on the night, and everyone who supported us by coming to the concert.  Thank you!

Ruel, our namesake, was found suffering from malnutrition in a hospital due to a cleft lip with cleft palate. He was unable to suckle properly or ingest food to satisfy his growing body. His mother could not afford the surgery to rectify this ailment, or the nutrients necessary to provide her child with an adequate diet. Thanks to the simple surgery to rectify this problem Ruel is now a happy and healthy little boy.
