Service through Mission a Team from Bethlehem College
11 November 2009
This was the first Service Through Mission trip to Ruel Foundation, and an extension of the yearly Bethlehem College sponsorship of a child for minor surgery.
The experience for the team was rich and varied. The team were impacted by many opportunities they encountered, especially the life and death situations. At Ruel they helped out practically with sewing curtains, interacting with children, cleaning and digging a drain around the house. The team also helped out at Ruel’s birthing centre whenever possible, and some had the awesome privilege of being present for a baby’s birth!
A visit to the public hospital was a sad, eye opening experience. Families in poverty struggle to purchase medicines for their young children. The team bought some medicine for some of the really sick babies. However, not being able to locate and buy medicine in time for a premature baby resulted in no opportunity for recovery. Sadly we watched as the mother put him into a cardboard box to take him home on the bus. Here in New Zealand we are so fortunate for our healthcare and social welfare system.
The trip to Ruel has been a life changing experience for us all, and causes us to ask the question – how can I make a difference?
Thank you to the dedicated and compassionate staff at Ruel who gave up their precious time and energy to host the team.

Ruel, our namesake, was found suffering from malnutrition in a hospital due to a cleft lip with cleft palate. He was unable to suckle properly or ingest food to satisfy his growing body. His mother could not afford the surgery to rectify this ailment, or the nutrients necessary to provide her child with an adequate diet. Thanks to the simple surgery to rectify this problem Ruel is now a happy and healthy little boy.
