Yates Family Adventure in Missions
05 August 2009
Liz Yates has worked for the Ruel Foundation in NZ for almost two years now. Her job is to find businesses who will support us by putting a Donation Box on their counter top. She had already visited the Ruel House in 2008 but thought that her husband needed to go and see what it was all about. After talking with the family they decided instead of taking their usual summer holiday at Christmas, this year they would all go and see the work the Ruel Foundation do in the Philippines. So Adam and Liz and three daughters aged 17, 15 and 12 set off in July.
In no way did they want to be a burden so were determined to work hard in whatever needed to be done. Liz sewed new sheets for the childrens home, the girls built an outdoor playground for the children, Adam worked in the office to update records and repair computors, they all relieved the hard working staff by helping care for the children. It was terrific to be involved as a family supporting this ministry and now we will work harder here in NZ to raise funds for Ruel.
Vanessa (17yrs) said, "what I liked most about going to the Ruel House was getting to know the children living there, seeing how much we could help by doing small things like building them a place to play, or spending time with them."
Olivia (15yrs) said, "we got to see extreme poverty, they wear clothes till they fall off, live in thatch houses, don't have enough food to eat and yet they seemed happy, content. That was hard to grasp, that people with so little could be content. We saw babies whose mothers had died and the family had no food to give them, our Philippine Director told them to come to the Ruel House the next day and we were able to give them some milk powder for the babies. My heart went out to these children and their parents, it would be such a hard life to live with these sorts of things on a daily basis."

Ruel, our namesake, was found suffering from malnutrition in a hospital due to a cleft lip with cleft palate. He was unable to suckle properly or ingest food to satisfy his growing body. His mother could not afford the surgery to rectify this ailment, or the nutrients necessary to provide her child with an adequate diet. Thanks to the simple surgery to rectify this problem Ruel is now a happy and healthy little boy.
