Surgeries performed by The Ruel Foundation


The Ruel Foundations raises money to provide free surgeries for children living in poverty with physical deformities  in developing nations. Often, a physical deformity that is relatively simple to operate on goes unattended well into adulthood and in some cases for the individuals entire life.

The problem of cleft lip and palate is particularly severe in the Philippine Islands where most of our work takes place and where thousands of children suffer ridicule and rejection from a cleft lip or clubfeet etc. The Foundation concentrates on children who live in poverty in isolated areas and with little hope of help.

For approximately $US325.00 a child can receive corrective surgery for a cleft lip or palate from excellent surgeons in the Philippines. This cost includes finding the child, doctors visits, transportation, accommodation, hospital stay, medication and the surgery itself. This cost is an average as medical expenses can rise rapidly once the child has been fully diagnosed and additional problems detected. Fluctuating international exchange rates and delays in surgeries can also add to the patients costs. The Foundation is concentrating on the island of Mindoro with the aim of greatly reducing the incidents of cleft lip and palate in addition to funding surgeries for a variety of other physical deformities.

Ruel, our namesake, was found suffering from malnutrition in a hospital due to a cleft lip with cleft palate. He was unable to suckle properly or ingest food to satisfy his growing body. His mother could not afford the surgery to rectify this ailment, or the nutrients necessary to provide her child with an adequate diet. Thanks to the simple surgery to rectify this problem Ruel is now a happy and healthy little boy.
